Will macOS Tahoe run on Intel Macs?

Apple’s new macOS Tahoe is packed with fresh features and amazing design updates, but not every Mac will get a chance to enjoy them. If you’re using an Intel-based Mac, here’s what you need to know.

macOS Tahoe supported devices

Some Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip will still get macOS Tahoe, but this will probably be their last big update. Also, these models won’t get access to the new Apple Intelligence features, which are exclusive to Apple Silicon Macs.

Here’s which Intel Macs will get macOS Tahoe:

  • MacBook Pro (16‑inch, 2019)

  • MacBook Pro (13‑inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

  • iMac (Intel, 2020)

  • Mac Pro (Intel, 2019)

If you have one of these Macs, you’ll still get all the main features of macOS Tahoe, just without the new AI tools that need Apple’s latest chips to run.

What if my Intel Mac won’t run Tahoe?

Don’t panic — your Mac will still work just fine. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • You’ll still get security updates for a while, even without the newest macOS.
  • Your apps will keep working, unless they require the latest OS.
  • Plan ahead — if you want to enjoy all the new features, consider upgrading to an Apple Silicon Mac when you’re ready.
