Five Findings From One Million Macs: April–June 2026 macOS Report
What has changed about using a Mac in 2026?
We still browse, work, and store our files much the same way we always have. But AI, cloud services, and modern workflows are changing how Macs work — and how we care for them today.
Earlier this year, our Inside One Million Macs report explored the state of Mac maintenance. Building on that research, we analyzed data from more than one million devices collected between April and June 2026.
The findings reveal five shifts shaping the way we use our Macs.
Finding 1. Keeping Macs fast is becoming a habit
For years, Mac maintenance was largely synonymous with freeing up storage. Looking across almost one million Macs, we're seeing a new maintenance habit emerge.

Performance optimization is often seen as something to address only when a Mac becomes noticeably slow. Today, hundreds of thousands of users actively manage memory, startup processes, and routine maintenance tasks to keep their machines fast and responsive.
What do users optimize?
The most frequently used performance tools focused on routine maintenance rather than one-time performance fixes.
Weekly Maintenance accounted for the largest share of performance optimizations, followed by Background Items cleanup. 6 in 10 Performance users also chose to free up RAM, suggesting they prioritize maintaining everyday responsiveness over waiting for noticeable slowdowns.
Why is this happening?
While baseline hardware improved rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s, entry-level RAM and SSD capacity have grown much more slowly over the past decade. At the same time, the average Mac workload has changed dramatically.
Think about what's running on your Mac right now. A browser with 30 tabs. Multiple tabs with AI chatbots. Several background processes you never opened yourself. A handful of apps you downloaded to try and forgot about. Modern Macs spend much of their day multitasking — even when they look idle.
As workloads continue to grow, keeping a Mac responsive is becoming less about recovering lost speed and more about preserving it.
Perhaps, a decade ago, upgrading your hardware was often the answer to better performance. Today, it’s increasingly about managing everything competing for that hardware in the first place.
Finding 2. The biggest storage problem isn't always what people save
We tend to blame full storage on the files we choose to keep: photos, videos, large downloads, or old projects. Looking at one million Macs, we’re seeing a different trend.

Nearly 500,000 users found old software they thought they'd already removed.

The typical user removed 97 forgotten or duplicate items from their Mac.

More than 100,000 users turned to storage mapping tools to understand where their disk space had gone.
Modern storage problems are driven not only by what users intentionally keep, but also by what everyday use leaves behind: application leftovers (748K cleanups), installers (319K), duplicate content (151K), or even browser downloads.
Across almost one million Macs, the largest cleanup categories consistently came from this growing layer of digital residue — not from files users actually chose to keep.
Why is this happening?
Years ago, software was something you installed and kept for years. Today, apps are far more disposable.
Think about your own Mac. You download an app to edit a PDF. Another to try an AI model. A game you'll only play once. But removing an app rarely removes everything that came with it.
Support files, preferences, caches, login items, and other application data often remain scattered throughout macOS long after the app itself is gone.
At the same time, the way we work has changed. We install more software, experiment more freely, and move between cloud services, devices, and file versions more often than ever before. Duplicate files follow a similar pattern. Across the Macs we analyzed, an astonishing 26.5 million forgotten or duplicate files were removed.
Modern storage problems are becoming less visible, and the files taking up space are the ones most users never think to look for.
Finding 3. One routine instead of fragmented troubleshooting
As Macs continue to grow more capable, users are simplifying how they take care of them. Rather than managing storage, performance, and security individually, they prefer a single maintenance routine.

Why is this happening?
Most people don't experience Mac maintenance as a set of separate problems. They experience it as a single feeling: “my Mac feels messy or slow”. Behind that feeling may be storage, startup processes, or dozens of other system changes happening at once. But users rarely think about their Mac in those technical categories.
Rather than learning which tool solves which problem, users gravitate toward a single routine that promises to keep the entire system healthy. For most users, this isn't a one-time fix — the typical all-in-one maintenance check is repeated every three weeks.
The popularity of one-click maintenance also reflects a broader shift in software: people expect technology to handle complexity for them, not expose it.
Finding 4. The biggest security risks are becoming less visible
Security may be the least frequently maintained part of the modern Mac — but it's one of the richest sources of hidden data.

More than 2.3 billion browser privacy records accumulated across users' Macs — revealing just how much personal data everyday browsing leaves behind.
For years, Mac security meant avoiding malware. Our latest data suggests the biggest risks may be hiding in places most users never think to look.
Only about 3 in 10 users ran a dedicated security check, yet each scan uncovered nearly 10,000 privacy and security-related records on the average Mac. More strikingly, over 2.3 billion browser privacy records accumulated across users' Macs, showing how much of our digital traces lurk around simply by browsing the web.
Why is this happening?
In 2026, your browser has become the front door to your Mac. It's where you work, bank, shop, chat with AI, and sign in to nearly every service you use. It's also where an increasing number of modern attacks begin.
That shift is visible far beyond our own data. Apple is on track for a record year of security updates in 2026, with a significant share focused on WebKit — the browser engine powering Safari. Security researchers point to browser abuse, fake apps, infostealers, ClickFix attacks, and AI-powered scams as some of the fastest-growing threats targeting Mac users today.
The data suggests that modern Mac security is no longer just about keeping malware out. Increasingly, it's about understanding and managing the digital footprint that everyday browsing leaves behind.
Finding 5. The growing footprint of system data
When people think about junk on a Mac, they usually picture forgotten downloads, old screenshots, or files they never got around to deleting.
Our data suggests a growing share of reclaimable storage is now generated by macOS and everyday applications as part of delivering the fast, responsive experience users expect.

Nearly 1 in 2 Macs accumulated enough system-generated files to require cleanup.

The average user removed 12 GB of temporary system and application data.

System Junk became the single largest cleanup category with nearly 1.2 million cleanups — more than any other type of removable data.
Modern Macs constantly generate caches, previews, logs, temporary files, document versions, and other working data. They are created to make apps launch faster, searches return instantly, and everyday interactions feel seamless.
Most of the time, they're doing exactly what they're supposed to do.
But over months or years of normal use, it can become one of the largest sources of reclaimable storage across the Macs we analyzed.
Why is this happening?
Modern operating systems perform far more work behind the scenes than they did even a decade ago. The more capable the operating system becomes, the more temporary data it naturally creates. macOS already removes a significant amount of this data automatically through background maintenance and system cleanup.
Even so, users removed nearly 6 petabytes of temporary system data during the period we analyzed — the equivalent of about 94,000 64 GB iPhones.
Rather than an occasional maintenance issue, this is becoming a normal characteristic of modern computing. And as operating systems continue to do more on our behalf, understanding what your Mac creates automatically is becoming just as important as managing the files you create yourself.
We expect our Macs to be a smart layer between us and our work. Not just run our apps, but organize our projects, manage complexity, protect our privacy, and stay fast year after year.
And that changes what good maintenance looks like. It's built around routine, not fragmented troubleshooting. It's about caring for the hidden layers your Mac depends on every day.
Which, in the end, leaves us with an interesting paradox: the more invisible technology becomes, the more the invisible matters.
